Introduction :

Ohms law: - Ohm’s Law deals with the relationship between voltage and current in a metal conductor

The law state that the current flowing through a metal conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its ends provided the temperature and other physical conditions remains same

Ohm’s Law Test

to carry out Ohms law test we need the following equipments

  • Voltmeter (v)
  • Ammeter (A)
  • Resistor (Nichrome wire usually of 0.5 meter  long )
  • Connecting wires
  • Beaker
  • Water
  • Battery ( 9 V )
  • Rheostat

For Ohms Law test set up the circuit as show in the circuit diagram

The current through the resistance wire of unknown resistance ( R) is set to any convenient value by adjusting the rheostat. The readings of the ammeter and voltmeter is then taken

The resistance wire in this case is made of an alloy called nichrome, it is kept at constant temperature through out the experiment, and this can be achieved by keeping the nichrome wire in water taken in the beaker

The experiment is repeated by changing the ammeter reading (current). In each case note down the voltmeter reading (potential difference). The readings of the experiment can be recorded in the table

The Experiment result shows that the current and potential difference are in direct proportion

If a graph of current against p.d is plotted,

  1. the graph is straight line passing through the e origin
  2. Doubling the Pd doubles the current
  3. Dividing the P.d by current always gives the same value

Voltmeter reading /Ammeter reading   = a constant

This constant is called Resistance of the nichrome wire

With voltmeter reading in volts and ammeter reading in ampere, resistance is measure in Volts /amperes or Ohms
